Winters On Its Way, Time To Think Rugs

Monday, August 29th, 2011

The dark nights are approaching, the warm weather seems ages ago, the barbecue is back in storage, the school summer holiday’s are coming to an end, so is it really time to think winter. I would say nearly!
The idea of spending a lot more time indoors is becoming reality, so its time to start thinking HOME.
The odd beam of sun shows up dirty windows and dust and last years interior seems 10 years old.
So is it time for a complete re-decorate or a simple spruce up?..
Either way a new rug would be a welcome and relatively easy way to totally transform your decor, bright contemporary rugs can add colour and completely alter the look of your room. Plain rugs can add a subtle and easy on the eye shade change or a shaggy rug will add comfort and warmth.

What is A Felted Wool Rug

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

You only have to spend a few minutes touring the home department in most high street stores to come across felted wool products, items such as cushion covers and other soft furnishings are scattered around displays and sales areas.
To keep up to date with interior trends we have now launched a few rug ranges to compliment felted wool products, our two designer ranges are Roses rugs and Pebble rugs both these ranges are handmade from 100% felted wool and both are stunning.

So what is felted wool, to be honest I had to do some research myself to be as accurate as possible.

Felted wool is basically matted wool, the process involves soaking wool in hot soapy water, this opens tiny scales on the fibre surface which agitate each other and interlock, this aided with compression mats the fibres together, once the wool cools the pile locks as the scales close. The end result is a tough and durable fibre which retains its softness.

Sparkle Rugs Update

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Sparkle rugs are a relatively new type of rug, they were first imported into the UK in large quantity’s around 7 years ago, one of the original rugs was our Sparkle Heavy Weight this is still our best selling sparkle range.

So what makes sparkle rugs so popular and how have they progressed over the last few years?

In my opinion they were inspired by shaggy rugs which have been around since the fifty’s and  sixties and are still very popular,  sparkle rugs added that step into a more contemporary looking rug that could blend with shiny soft furnishing and chrome / stainless furniture. The light reflecting yarn which is usually viscose or polyester  adds a gloss, shiny appearance that emits warmth and glamour, ideal for the ever so popular modern décors and contemporary living space, you only have to pick an interiors magazine to realise the modern look is here to stay!

So what’s new, manufactures are constantly looking for new ideas and as yarn spinning and technology moves forward so do sparkle ranges and yarn construction.
The main advance is to combine different yarns into one rug, this can add to textures and pile heights, the different yarns normal used to achieve this are thick spun yarn, micro fibre yarn, loop pile yarn and lurex. Colour’s are also been updated, new colours such as Sapphire,   Damson,  Sienna and Pewter have recently been added to our ranges.

Sparkle rugs are sure to keep advancing and are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Recent History Of Rugs

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Over the past two decades rugs have changed dramatically, up until the mid Nineties styles and patterns were very limited. The majority of designs were traditional and either machine made woven Wilton, generally made in Belgium or handmade Chinese rugs, Oriental rugs like Persian rugs were obviously popular as were sheepskin rugs.
Around the mid nineties manufactures started to look more at interior décors and soft furnishing which were already starting to enter the modern era, the result inspired manufactures and importers to look at new modern designs and neutral themed rugs, this kicked started the whole industry to grow and evolve the same way soft furnishings and interior fashions had.

Nowadays customers can choose between thousands of designs and hundreds of yarn types and textures, new weaving and tufting techniques are constantly evolving and as a result so are textures and pile types.
As with all fashions and as the old saying states ‘what goes around comes around’ we are now seeing the demand for traditional and Chinese rugs rising, unfortunately Chinese rugs are becoming harder to source as Chinese manufactures continue to concentrate on modern rugs and rugs that are faster to manufacture.

Below are two pictures, one of the tried and tested Chinese Aubusson range and the other is our designer Tartan range.
